Jay Benedict (April 11, 1951-April 4, 2020) was an American voice actor, best known in the UK for his role as Major John Kieffer in the TV Series Foyles War. Benedict was the voice of Shiro Hagen in the English adaptation of Star Fleet.
Benedict lived and worked in Europe since the 1960's. His first film role, at the age of 11, was in the 1963 Tony Saytor film La Bande à Bobo. He would later stage act early in his career, with notable credits such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show in the Kings Road in the early 70's and Sweet Bird Youth.
Benedict had the unfortunate distinction of having his roles in two successful films completely edited out. First as Deak in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977) alongside Garrick Hagon and Mark Hamill. Then later as Russ Jorden in Aliens (1986) although this role would later be restored in the Special Edition DVDs.
In addition to English, he also worked in French and Spanish, and had performed widely on the continent. He was married to actress Phoebe Scholfield and together they ran Sync or Swim, an ADR/Loop group. They have also translated and written movies together - such as The Card Player (Il Cartaio) - which they translated into English. In his spare time, Benedict reviewed books for the literary website Vulpes Libris and felt he'd "failed dismally if his review doesn’t elicit at least ONE outraged response".
Benedict passed away on April 4, 2020 after a battle with the Coronavirus disease.
